Steve Reich

Minimalist pioneer and composer Steve Reich has been called one of the music's "most original thinkers" and one of the few composers who can claim to have "altered the direction of music history." [1]

In 1966, following compositional studies at the Juilliard School of Music and Mills College, Reich formed his own ensemble. What started with three musicians grew into the 18-plus member touring group Steve Reich and Musicians. During this time, Reich was experimenting with repeated vocal phrases and looped recordings. This process resulted in the seminal works "It's Gonna Rain" and "Come Out."

Reich's experimentation continued and was influenced by his studies of drumming at the Institute for African Studies at the University of Ghana; Balinese Gamelan at the American Society for Eastern Arts; and traditional Hebrew chanting in Jerusalem. In 1974, Reich released what many considered his masterpiece Music for 18 Musicians.

Since that time, Reich has collaborated with a litany of choreographers, musicians and video artists including the Kronos Quarter, Laura Dean and Beryl Korot.

In 2007, Reich received the prestigious Polar Music Prize.
