McCarthy was drafted 23rd overall in the 1999 NHL Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks. He made his NHL debut in 2000, playing five regular season games with the Blackhawks. On August 22, 2005, McCarthy was traded to the Vancouver Canucks. He was traded again, on March 9, 2006, to the Atlanta Thrashers.
