On June 11, 2008, Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper apologized to Native Canadians for the Canadian government's actions in removing them from their homes and forcing them to attend residential schools. The apology was similar to an apology made by Australian prime minister Paul Rudd to Australian aborigines earlier this year.

On February 13, 2008, Australian prime minister Paul Rudd made a formal apology to Australia's Aborigine population for the government's actions in taking children away from them.
