Political Merger
In 2002, Harper was elected leader of the Canadian Alliance and became the Leader of the Opposition in the Canadian Parliament. From there, he negotiated and agreement with the Progressive Conservative Party's leader, Peter MacKay. Harper's Conservative Party of Canada won a minority government in the 2006 parliamentary elections to make Harper the new party's first Prime Minister. He is also the first Prime Minster in 12 years not to be affiliated with the Liberal Party.-
