The Sci-Fi original series, Stargate Atlantis, is a spin-off from the television series Stargate SG-1. SG-1 was inspired by the 1994 film, Stargate which starred James Spader and Kurt Russell.

Stargate Atlantis takes place in the present time. In the original series, an object was discovered that allows people and equipment to travel between planets by wormhole. The Atlantis expedition has gone to the Pegasus Galaxy to live in and explore a city that is millions of years old, constructed by the now-extinct predecessor to the human race: The Ancients. The explorers, on their first mission to another planet, accidentally awoke a race of humanoids called the Wraith, who feed on human beings. The Atlantis expedition focus turns toward keeping the Wraith from killing humans in the Pegasus Galaxy, and preventing them from finding Earth.GateWorld: Atlantis

In 2008 an announcement was made that the Sci Fi Channel would not be signing on for more episodes of Atlantis. The series finale aired on Sci Fi on January 9, 2009 at 9 PM. The series end sees the Atlantis team in a race against the Wraith, who are headed toward Earth with plans to build a hive. While the writers have promised that the series will not end on a cliffhanger, there will be a two hour Atlantis movie to air on Sci Fi later in 2009.
