StarCraft

StarCraft, the first release in the StarCraft series, is a military science fiction real-time strategy game by Blizzard Entertainment.

Players focus on the acquisition and control of resources harvested by worker units: minerals and vespene gas. Minerals, which display as blue crystalline formations, are required for all normal units. Vespene gas, which appears as a geyser with green clouds emanating from it, is required for advanced units and upgrades. A refinery must be constructed before worker units can harvest vespene gas. Blizzard's Internet service Battle.net enables online multiplayer gaming with no additional fees.

Set in the 26th century, the game revolves around three species fighting for dominance in a distant part of the Milky Way galaxy:

1. Terrans: Humans exiled from Earth
2. Zerg: Insectoid race in pursuit of genetic perfection
3. Protoss: Humanoid species with advanced technology and psionic abilities

• The storyline has been adapted and expanded through a series of novels. There are currently three available expansion packs and a sequel in development.
