Created by Gene Roddenberry in the mid-1960s, the original Star Trek was pitched as a "Wagon Train to the stars" after the popular Western television show of the time. Set in the 23rd century, Star Trek follows the adventures of the Starship Enterprise and its crew led by Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner).
The success of the original program led to five spinoff television series as well as 11 theatrical films.
