Star Trek XI, the eleventh film in the motion picture franchise from Paramount Pictures based on the science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry, is a prequel to that program. The film is directed by Lost and Alias creator J.J. Abrams and produced by Abrams' Bad Robot production company.
Star Trek XI has been nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Makeup and Best Visual Effects. Star Trek won for Best Achievement in Makeup at the 82nd annual Academy Awards on March 7, 2010. Those accepting the award included: Barney Burman, Mindy Hall, and Joel Harlow.

Summary
As James T. Kirk is born, his father dies in a battle with a mysterious alien vessel searching for Ambassador Spock. However, Spock, half human half Vulcan, is still a child on the planet Vulcan and scorned by his fellow Vulcans for his heritage. These two are destined to become bitter rivals that becomes an uneasy friendship. Years later, when Kirk is in is twenties and grown into a troublemaker, he becomes part of Starfleet. There the two meet. Both end up on the USS Enterprise, Spock is assigned but Kirk uses Leonard McCoy’s help to get aboard. This unknown to Captain Pike who is Captain of the ship. In a series of events, Spock assumes the bridge and during a confrontation with Kirk accuses him of mutiny and strands him on the planet Delta Vega. Saved by an older Spock from an alien animal, Spock explains the blame the Romulans put on him for the destruction of their planet Romulus. Spock give Kirk the mission to save the Earth with a hint of the friendship that will begin between the younger Spock and Kirk.
History
The Star Trek franchise is beloved by science fiction fans, including a number of actors. Chris Pine declined a role in the adaptation of James Ellroy's book White Jazz in order to be cast as James T. Kirk. Zachary Quinto, popular with science fiction fans due to his role on the television series Heroes, portrays Mr. Spock. Eric Bana, who has previous credentials in the science fiction fan community for his portal of Bruce Banner in The Hulk and portrays the villain in Star Trek, self-identifies as a fan. Winona Ryder is cast as Amanda Grayson, Mr. Spock's human mother.
On March 5, 2009 a trailer for the film was posted online, which opened with a young Kirk recovering from a bar fight. A patron tells him that he knew his father, who had saved over 800 people during his 12 minute reign as Captain of a Starship. Among those saved was Kirk, himself. The man at the bar encourages the troubled Kirk to enlist in Starflight and follow in his father's footsteps. We see Kirk train, fight and ultimately become captain of his own ship. Released on May 8, 2009, Star Trek was a summer blockbuster, pulling in approximately $76.5 million during its opening weekend alone.
