A stapler is a device used for combining multiple sheets of paper by driving a metal staple through them.
History
The first stapler was created during the 18th century in France for King Louis XV. Each staple was required to be inscribed with the insignia of the royal court. In 1866, the Novelty Paper Fastener was patented. It loaded a single staple, used to bind papers, books, carpet, furniture and boxes. The staples came in four different sizes, 3/16 inches, 1/4 inches, 3/8 inches, and 1/2 inches. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, several were developed and patented that punched paper and or folded paper to fix sheets together without a physical staple needed.
