The Stanley Cup Finals is the final round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Under the current structure, the Western Conference champion plays against the Eastern Conference champion in the Stanley Cup Finals to determine the overall National Hockey League champion.
The 2009 Stanley Cup Finals featured a rematch of the 2008 finals, with the Detroit Red Wings facing the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Red Wings defeated the Penguins in the first two games and the Penguins came back to defeat the Wings in the second two games. On June 6, 2009, the Wings defeated the Penguins to lead the series 3-2, but fell in Pittsburgh on June 9, 2009. The Penguins won game seven and the championship on June 12, 2009, in Detroit.
