  • Stanford University is a private four year institution of higher learning. It is located southeast of San Francisco, California. Stanford is one of the most selective universities in the United States. Founder Leland Stanford was at one time the Governor of California, who made his fortune in railroads. Stanford and his wife named the university after their son, who had died of typhoid. The school required no tuition until the 1930s. Stanford has always been coeducational, though there were limits on the number of women who could enroll for many years. Today, undergraduate enrollment is about even between men and women, and men out number women two to one in the graduate department.
