  • The Stanford University football team plays college football as a member of the Pacific Ten Conference. The school enjoys a rivalry with nearby California at Berkley in a contest dubbed the Big Game. The Cardinals play their home games at Stanford Stadium, which was also the site for Super Bowl XIX in January of 1985.
  • History of the Cardinal

    The Stanford Cardinals has appeared in 20 bowl games in school history, most recently in 2001. They have had one player win the Heisman Trophy, Jim Plunkett won the award in 1970. Other great football players in Stanford history include John Elway, John Brodie, Ernie Nevers, James Lofton, Jeff Siemon, Paul Wiggin, Darrin Nelson, Tony Hill and John Lynch. In addition, several legendary coaches have been associated with the program, such as Pop Warner, Walter Camp, Dennis Green, John Ralston and Bill Walsh.
