  • NBA Coaching Career

Stan Van Gundy's first NBA job came in 1995 when he was hired by the Miami Heat as an assistant under Pat Riley. When Riley resigned in 2003, Van Gundy was named to be his replacement. Riley remained team president.

After a trade was made to bring Shaquille O'Neal to the Heat, Van Gundy led the team to the 2005 Eastern Conference Finals. However, the Heat would lose to the Detroit Pistons in seven games. Van Gundy resigned from the team the next season and Riley took over again as head coach.

Van Gundy returned to coaching when he was hired by the Orlando Magic in 2007. Van Gundy led the team to 52 wins and made it to the second round of the NBA Playoffs in his first season with Orlando.NBA.com: Stan Van Gundy
