Stan Getz

  • Stan Getz was an influential Jazz saxophonist known affectionately by his nickname "The Sound." Getz is best known for helping to incorporate Bossa Nova music into the Jazz idiom, exemplified by his Grammy Award-winning hit "The Girl From Ipanema."
  • Career

    After first learning to play the Saxophone at age 13, Getz played with a number of different artists before starting his soloist career as a member of Woody Herman's band, which lasted from 1947 to 1949. After stepping out on his own, Getz became a key figure in the popularization of Bossa Nova, recording a number of hit songs, including his signature piece, "The Girl from Ipanema."
