St. Jude Classic

The St. Jude Classic is a golf tournament on the PGA Tour. It is held in Memphis Tennessee every June and is currently being played at the Tournament Players Club at Southwind. Brian Gay won the 2009 event with a total score of 262 and earned top prize of $1,008,000. The 2010 event took place from June 7 through June 13 with a total purse of $5,600,000.

Background

An early version of the tournament named the Memphis Invitational was held in 1945 and 1946. The tournament was not held from 1947 through 1957 and in 1958 the tournament was founded under the name Memphis Open. In 1970 is was renamed to the Danny Thomas Memphis Classic. It was named after the actor Danny Thomas in exchange for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital would become the tournament's charity. St. Jude Hospital is one of the world's best for research and treatment of pediatric cancer.http://www.stanfordstjude.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=14&Itemid=29 In 1985 the name of the tournament was changed to the St Jude Memphis Classic. After just one year the named changed again to the Federal Express St. Jude Classic. The tournament changed names two more times before being known as the St, Jude Classic in 2009. Fred Haas won the first event in 1945 and Billy Maxwell was victorious in 1958. Dave Hill won the even four times. Lee Trevino has won three times. Nick Price, David Toms and Justin Leonard have each won the tournament twice. 2010 St. Jude Classic

In the first round, Lee Westwood shot round of seven under par to lead the tournament. He was one under par through 11 holes, but had a birdie on number 12, then two more on holes 14 and 15 and an eagle on hole number 16. Also on the leaderboard were Phil Tataurangi, Mike Connell, Bob Estes, Tim Petrovic, Garrett Willis, D.J. Garrett Willis moved in to a tie for the lead after he shot a 65 in the second round to finish at nine under par. Casey Wittenberg dropped from second to 27th place after a round of 74. Phil Tataurangi shot a 73 to fall into a tie for 32nd with Padraig Harrington, who shot a 74. Craig Barlow and DA Points had the biggest improvement from the first round as both shot rounds of 66. In the third round, Brian Day shot the lowest score when he posted a 65. That moved him to five under par and a tie for ninth. Second round leader Lee Westwood struggled to a one over par round and dropped him out of the lead and into a tie for third. Robert Garrigus shot a 66 and moved from fourth into sole posession of first place at eleven under par. Robert Karlsson was two shots behind and Heath Slocum was tied with Westwood at eight under par. David Toms had the lowest score in the final round with a 65. He finished at two under par and tied for 29th. Third round leader Robert Garrigus shot a round of one over par to finish at ten under par.
