History of Spring

Spring has been a part of life since the beginning of time, when the seasons changed from frigid and cold, to the warm inviting temperatures that announce the arrival of this new season. In the mid 1500s, the Julian Calendar marked the beginning of the new year on April 1, when Pope Gregory XIII took over reign of the people, he demanded a new calender. This new calendar was called the Gregorian Calendar and it changed the date of the new year back to the middle of Winter, January 1. These changes were met with resistance from some of the citizens and others were not even aware of them. Easter bunnies and Easter eggs are used as the recognized symbols of Spring because of their relation to fertility. The festival of Eostre, the Germanic goddess of fertility was celebrated by the early Anglo-Saxons and the tradition continued through-out the centuries.
