  • Spencer Tracy made 74 films and won two Academy Awards, having been nominated nine times over the course of his long film career. He played gangsters early in his career in films with little acclaim, but after moving to MGM, he quickly made two films that earned him back to back Oscars: Captains Courageous and Boys Town.

He started his on and off screen relationship with Katharine Hepburn in 1942 when they costarred in Woman of the Year. Tracy had a reputation for being difficult on set, and was a heavy drinker. He suffered from emphysema and died from a heart attack two weeks after completing filming on Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, for which he was nominated posthumously for an Oscar.
