Soy foods are made from the soy bean, a plant with a high protein content. Soy foods can be used to imitate dairy products, and are often used as a protein source in place of meat or fish.
Health Benefits
Soy can decrease LDL (so-called "bad" cholesterol). Some studies have indicated that it may protect against cancer, but others refute that claim.
Health Risks
Soy is one of the "big eight" foods that cause 90% of food allergy reactions (the other seven being peanuts, wheat, dairy, seafood, shellfish, tree nuts, and eggs). Soy products have also been implicated in male infertility.
