The Soweto Gospel Choir is a Grammy-Award winning African gospel choir. They have performed alongside artists such as Bono, Queen, Jimmy Cliff, The Eurythmics and Peter Gabriel. They have also performed for Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey and have appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
They performed at the 2009 Academy Awards on Sunday, February 23. Their collaboration with Peter Gabriel, the song "Down to Earth" from Disney's Wall-E, were nominated for Best Original Song, but did not win.Joburg.com: Soweto choir gets Oscar invite (February 20, 2009)
"Down to Earth" were up against the songs "Jai Ho" and "O Saya" from the film Slumdog Millionaire in the Best Song category. Jai Ho won.
