South Park "Over Logging" Episode Summary
Stan resists going to bed because he's watching something on the internet. Stan's mom has trouble getting both Stan and Shelly off the computer. Randy, Stan's dad, is also busying checking his e-mail and credit rating on the internet. Stan's mom says he can check one more thing on the internet. He chooses to watch pornography.
The next morning, Stan and Randy are both shocked to find that the internet is down. Randy screams at everyone not to panic. The whole family runs over to the Broflofsky's house in their underwear. The family runs to check, but Kyle finds the internet is down as well.
Both families go to Starbucks, believing that the internet will be working there. Everyone is South Park is beginning to riot and loot based on the lack of internet. It's even out at Starbucks!
After much debate, the town goes to watch television to find out the news. The news report is affected as well. The reporter cannot report the news as there is no internet.
After 8 days without internet, Randy is violently ill. He wants to check WebMD, but there is no internet. Shelly is worried about losing her internet boyfriend. Randy makes a bold decision to pack up his car and take his family to California to search for net access.
The family drives west in a black-and-white montage. They stop at a transient camp and Randy sings a folk song about how the internet has run away. The Marsh's and the other families talk about what it will be like in California when they have internet. Their discussion resembles the dreams about California of the Joad family in The Grapes of Wrath. The transients express doubt over how much internet there is to go around.
Stan tries to console Shelly, who weeps over her lost love.
The family continues to head west until they reach Silicon Valley. When they arrive, they find a harsh refugee camp led by the Red Cross. Some other transients tell them that there is a little bit of internet that gets rationed. Each family gets 40 seconds per day.
Back in South Park, the Broflofskys watch the news. The reporters on television are ecstatic about receiving a fax. The government says it is sending the military into the internet's home to repair it.
At an Area 51-type place, a government official gets introduced to "The Internet", a large blue machine that resembles a large modem. The large orange light in the modem is blinking.
Randy attempts to coax a Red Cross technician into giving him private internet time so that he can masturbate while watching pornography. The technician tells him to go away. While Randy wanders around the camp, a man brings him into an "Internet Porn Simulator" where you say whatever you want to see. In front of an empty computer screen, Randy calls out several perverse actions. Someone lowers a white piece of paper with drawings of stick figures into the computer area. This does not satisfy Randy.
On the television news, a crowd has gathered to ask the Internet what it wants. They have no luck reaching it. A man on a keyboard plays a sequence of notes to The Internet reminiscent of Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The military even fires a bullet into The Internet, but to no avail. Kyle stands up from his spot on the couch, and declares that he knows what's wrong.
At the refugee camp, Shelly and Stan impatiently wait for the internet. The Red Cross tells them they all must go to bed for the night. After the men have locked up their only computer, Randy sneaks into the trailer where they keep it to log onto the internet. Randy searches for fetish videos and is relieved when he finds them.
Everyone else at the camp hears loud moaning coming from the trailer, and they think someone is being attacked. Everyone breaks into the trailer and find Randy in a very embarrassing position.
At The Internet's lair, Kyle is about to try his plan to get it working again. Kyle approaches The Internet, unplugs it, then plugs it back in. The Internet works again.
Shelly is relieved, but it turns out her boyfriend Amir is at the refugee camp as well. They decide to go home and e-mail each other instead of talking in person. Shelly is pleased.
Back in South Park, Randy gives a speech at City Hall, saying they cannot take The Internet for granted. He says that everyone should only use The Internet for porn twice a day.
Randy's speech at the episode's conclusion seems to indicate an environmental message to South Park viewers. Randy says "We must stop over-logging....on," indicative of an activist statement against the logging industry. This sentiment, however, is not expressed elsewhere in the episode, and Parker/Stone may have had a different intention.
