The University of South Carolina South Carolina Gamecocks play college football in the East Division of the Southeastern Conference. The program was one of the original teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference, but they left the league following the 1970 season. After playing as an independent for 21 years, the school joined the SEC in 1992. Their main rival is Clemson. The team plays their home games at an on-campus facility at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia.

Great Gamecocks of the Past
Legendary players from the program's past include the 1980 Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers, John Abraham, Dan Reeves, Sterling Sharpe, Bill Currier, Dunta Robinson, Ducy Staley, Troy Williamson and Robert Brooks. The current head coach is Steve Spurrier, who won a national championship with the Florida Gators Football|Florida in 1996. The team has appeared in two bowl games under Spurrier's leadership. The school enters the 2008 season just two games under .500 in their all-time won-loss record. -
