Soul Calibur IV is the sixth fighting game in the Soul Calibur series and the first to feature online play in addition to the familiar Story, Arcade, Training and Museum modes. A new mode, Tower of Lost Souls, characters, 3D modeling and animations have been added to the gameplay experience.

Character creation returns from Soul Calibur 3 in which the selection of a character's attire not only influences his or her appearance, but also the battle-play behavior.

- Active Matching Battle (AMB): Fight multiple opponents at the same time under different circumstances
- Soul Gauge: Increases when attacking and decreases when defending
- Critical Finish: Empty an opponents Soul Gage twice to enable an immediate kill
