Soul Asylum is well known for its runaway hit, "Runaway Train", which achieved numerous awards and acclaim. Runaway Train won the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song, and launched its way to success with a triple-platinum record. This famous song became the anthem for missing children, and earned Soul Asylum a gig playing for President Bill Clinton’s first inauguration.http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:aifuxqr5ld0e
Soul Asylum History
In 1981, Loud Fast Rules was a band created by Dave Pirner, Karl Mueller, and Dan Murphy. They worked hard on their music, rebranding themselves as Soul Asylum in 1983, and adding drummer Grant Young in 1984.http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:aifuxqr5ld0e
In 1984, Soul Asylum reached their first level of success when they were signed by record label Twin/Tone. During their tenure with Twin/Tone, they created four albums. Then they decided to move to switch labels, and joined forces with A&M in 1987. However, their partnership with A&M did not work out well, and the band lost $200,000 when they left their contract.http://www.mnhs.org/library/tips/history_topics/132soulasylum.htm
In 1992, Soul Asylum finally reached success. Columbia Records signed them, and Soul Asylum worked hard to produce the album "Grave Dancers Union". Grave Dancers Union produced three good singles, but the third single, Runaway Train, launched them into the forefront of the music scene. Runaway Train won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in 1994, and turned Soul Asylum into a successful band.
