Loren and Carlo Ponti
Sofia Loren parlayed early minor success in beauty pageants into small roles in Italian films, which eventually brought her the notice of producer Carlo Ponti. Ponti and Loren fell in love, but Ponti was already married, and the Catholic Church refused to annul the union. In 1957, Ponti obtained a divorce in Mexico, and Loren married him. The divorce was not recognized in Italy, however, and Loren agreed to have the marriage annulled in 1962 to save Ponti from bigamy charges. In 1966, Ponti finally got his divorce, and Loren remarried him. They had two children and remained married until his death, nearly 41 years later.
