Sony Ericsson

Sony Ericsson is a combined consumer electronics business venture involving Sony and Ericsson. The major focus is on cellular phone technology. As of 2006, the partnership has resulted in the sale of 74 million units. They also serve as the title sponsor for the Women's Professional Tennis Association Tour.

Background

Sony Ericsson was formed in 2001 after Ericsson (a cell phone company from Sweden) suffered financial losses. Combining Ericsson's wireless prowess with Sony's longstanding electronics experience, the two companies own an equal share of the joint venture and now produce phones only under the Sony Ericsson name.
