Sonny Rollins

Sonny Rollins is a Grammy Award- winning American Jazz tenor saxophonist whose career has spanned over 50 years.

Career

Born and raised in New York City, Sonny Rollins began playing music at an early age and quickly gained fame as a sideman for Jazz luminaries such as Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. After branching out as a bandleader in his own right, Rollins produced a number of highly acclaimed albums during the 1950s. After a brief sabbatical, Rollins returned during the 1970s and 80s with a more Funk and R&B influenced sound. In 2006, Rollins completed the DownBeat Readers Poll triple win for: "Jazzman of the Year", "#1 Tenor Sax Player", and "Recording of the Year" for the CD "Without a Song: The 9/11 Concert."
