Career
Born and raised in New York City, Sonny Rollins began playing music at an early age and quickly gained fame as a sideman for Jazz luminaries such as Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. After branching out as a bandleader in his own right, Rollins produced a number of highly acclaimed albums during the 1950s. After a brief sabbatical, Rollins returned during the 1970s and 80s with a more Funk and R&B influenced sound. In 2006, Rollins completed the DownBeat Readers Poll triple win for: "Jazzman of the Year", "#1 Tenor Sax Player", and "Recording of the Year" for the CD " The 9/11 Concert."-
