  • Early Career

    Sonny was born on December 5, 1899 or March 11, 1908 in Glendora, Mississippi. He worked as a farmer and lived with his mother and stepfather until a family dispute forced him to leave the house. He began his musical career by playing the harmonica on the street to earn money. In 1941, he met "Junior" Lockwood and both began to sing in the streets of Helena, Arkansas. Their luck began to change when they started playing for free for a local radio station in exchange for advertising.
  • Musical Success

    In 1944, he was touring the southern United States with Elmore James. He recorded his first song "Dust my Broom". Sonny won professional recognition in 1963 when he toured in Europe. England received him with enthusiasm and he played with groups like The Animals and the Yardbirds. In addition to this, he also recorded in Copenhagen with the pianist Memphis Slim and guitarist Matt Murphy. He died in 1965 of a heart attack.
