Sonja Kohn is the founder and former chairman of Bank Medici in Austria. Kohn was discovered to have invested $2.1 billion of Bank Medici's money with Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme. Madoff was arrested by the FBI for securities fraud in 2008. Following Madoff's arrest and the discovery of Medici's investment, Austria regulators took control of the financial institution.
Following the takeover of Bank Medici, Kohn was notably missing from the public eye. An article in the New York Times speculated that she was hiding from angry Russian oligarchs whom had controlled a large portion of the funds invested with Madoff's securities firm. The New York Times: Austria's 'Woman on Wall St.' and Madoff (January 6, 2009)
