Sonic Unleashed is divided into two distinctive gameplay modes: 2D side-scroller and 3D platformer. During the day, Sonic flies through the world in classic Sonic style, collecting coins like a madman at lightning speed. At night, thanks to the influence of some corrupted Chaos Emeralds, Sonic transforms into a Werehog with stretchy arms. The gameplay style changes from 2D side-scroller to an action platformer set in a completely 3D world. Sonic beats up enemies, collects coins to replenish his health and solves puzzles.
In addition to these two modes, Sonic Unleashed features a town exploration gameplay element, which allows Sonic to socialize with each continent's inhabitants and complete a variety of quests for them.
