  Primitive socks were made from animal skins and tied around the ankles. Eventually, animal hair and fur would be used. in AD 1000, socks were seen as a sign of wealth. When the knitting machine was invented in 1589, socks could be made faster than by hand. Nylon socks were created in 1939.

  Socks now come in a wide variety of styles and colors and are made out of various materials. There are casual socks, dress socks, and athletic socks. Almost every major clothing brand has its own line of socks. Socks can also come in colorful patterns or have logos sewn into them. Most sports teams and colleges sell socks with their logo on them.
