Types of Soccer Balls
There are two popular versions of soccer balls.The truncated icosahedron, is the classic design which was popular in the early days of the organized sport in the 1950s and throughout the 1970's. It is made of 32 bulging panels, with 12 pentagons and 20 hexagons stitched together. The color pattern of the ball was usually black and white in color.The modern soccer ball, is a smoothly constructed design, with no bulges, and is machine stitched with approximately 14 panels. The design appearance, and color vary. Traditionally they are stamped with a logo of the event, or logo of the athletic company who designed the ball.
For the World Cup, the official ball is constructed by Adidas, who has been the provider for the popular event since 1970.
