A nine-foot long Burmese python killed two-year-old Shaiunna Hare at her family's home in Florida on July 2, 2009. The snake was a family pet.
How It Happened
The pet snake reportedly escaped from its terrarium for the second time in a few hours when it snuck into the room where the girl was sleeping and strangled her. Charles Darnell, the owner of the snake and boyfriend of Shaiunna Hare's mother, stabbed the snake repeatedly until it released from the girl's neck, but she was already dead.
While Darnell did not have a permit to own the exotic snake, it was not immediately known if he would face criminal charges in the incident.
