History
Artist Peyo had created a comic titled Johan et Pirlouit, about the medieval adventures of a king's page and his midget sidekick. In one adventure, they met little blue men called "Schtroumpfs", who helped them through their adventures. The little blue men became wildly popular, and were spun off into their own comic.Smurf Figurines
German company Schleich produces PVC Smurf figurines, which have become collectible items. Produced since 1965, there are over 400 figures, and 300 million have been sold.Smurfs and UNICEF
Peyo's heirs have authorized the use of the Smurfs in several campaigns for the relief organization UNICEF. One controversial fundraising advertisement showed the Smurf village being bombed by warplanes. UNICEF sold white Smurf dolls in 2008 that buyers can decorate themselves.-
