Slovenia is located in South Central Europe. It has in its border Croatia in the east and south, Italy in the west, the Adriatic Sea in the southwest, Austria in the north and Hungary in the northeast.
History
In it's early history Slovenia has been part of the Roman Empire, the Republic of Venice and the Austrian Empire among others. Between World War I and World War II Slovenia was part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and then in 1945 the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Slovenia would gain it's independence in 1991.
Politics
Slovenia has a President as the Head of State. The President is selected every five years by popular vote. Slovenia's executive branch consists of a cabinet and a prime minister. The bicameral Parliament of Slovenia consists of a National Assembly, which has ninety members, and the National Council which has forty members.
Geography
Slovenia consists of four major European geographic regions. The Mediterranean, the Dinarides, the Alps and the Pannonian plain.
