  • Sleeping Beauty is the 16th animated film produced by The Walt Disney Company. Released in 1959, the film is based on the classic fairytale of Sleeping Beauty, popularized in 1697 by Charles Perrault. It was the last film produced by Walt Disney that was based on a traditional fairytale narrative and is also the last Disney film to use hand-inked cells. The film took almost a decade to produce and was intended to be a break from the more rounded style that had been adopted in earlier Disney films. The resulting artwork is highly stylized with a high degree of detail. This was aided by the use of large format Super Technirama 70 film. The animation of the characters was based on live-action scenes filmed with actors during the planning stages of the film. Sleeping Beauty's soundtrack is adapted from Tchaikovsky's 1890 ballet of the same name.
