A sleeping bag is traditionally a substitution for a bed in an outdoor environment. Essentially, it is a padded blanket with a zipper to enclose the body from the elements.
Types of Sleeping bags
The traditional sleeping bag is a blanket equipped with a zipper from the feet to the upper body. It folds over itself to provide a cocoon-like environment to shield the inhabitant from the elements and to store heat. When unzipped, the sleeping bag opens up into a larger blanket. A sleeping bag is usually rolled up and secured by a cord or a strap when not in use.
Another version of the sleeping bag is the mummy bag, which tapers from wide at the top to narrow at the feet. The zipper does not reach the bottom half. The purpose of this is to maintain the heat for the lower part of the body. It also has a draw string near the top to aid in sealing in heat. In general, the mummy bag is designed for more strenuous conditions. Mummy bags also tend to be more portable and can be stored within a bag.
