Sleep masks are used to help block out light in order to improve sleep, or merely to rest the eyes. They are usually soft, lightweight pads, fastened over the eyes using an elastic or velcro strap. Sleep masks should be snug, but not exert pressure on the eyes themselves. Common materials include synthetic fabrics, as well as silk and organic terrycloth. Colors range from solid black to exotic prints.
Usage and Efficacy
Sleep masks are used by nocturnes (people who sleep during the day) to block out sunlight, as well as insomniacs who are sensitive to small amounts of light. They can be particularly useful for people who live in urban environments with high levels of nighttime light pollution, or for people who sleep on planes. Sleep masks can also be used for other therapeutic purposes, such as providing a temporary respite from the computer screen. The efficacy of sleep masks may be limited, however. Some sleep studies have indicated that light can interfere with sleep patterns, even if the eyes are completely insulated, and only the skin is exposed.
