The first skateboard was made in the 1950, but it did not look like the typical skateboards of today. It had a handle bar, similar to a scooter. So it was more of a scooter than a skateboard. It took many years to come up with the idea of what we know today as the skateboard.
Skateboards a built of a platform called a deck, set on four wheels that are attached with what are called trucks. People ride a skateboard by pushing with one foot while the other is on the board. Other than being used for transportation and recreation, skateboards they are also used to do tricks. Skateboarding is considered an extreme sport.

- Skateboards do need to be replaced after hard wear
- Grip tape is a sandpaper-like tape that goes on top of the deck to give more grip
- Does not require special shoes, but shoes with a flat bottom are best
- You can buy skateboard parts and assemble your own board
- Make sure you buy matching wheels and deck
- More expensive materials usually mean the board will be more durable for riding and tricks
- Custom boards are more expensive and involve choosing a deck in a specific size with specific art
