In 1850, Isaac M. Singer looked at sewing machines invented by others and designed his own device. His version would include a treadle to replace the hand crank, teeth to feed the fabric and a presser foot to hold work in place. He received his first lock stitch patent in 1851 and followed with the formation of I.M. Singer and Company co-founded with lawyer Edward C. Clark. In 1870 The Red "S" trademark with sewing girl was introduced. By 1890 Singer had %80 of the worldwide sewing machine market. Singer introduced their still popular Featherweight portable sewing machine at the Chicago World's Fair in 1933. The company went on to introduce a home press and serger with comparable features to commercial machines. The company continues to innovate and offers a full line of sewing machines and sergers for home and industrial use worldwide.http://www.singerco.com/company/history.html
