Oldest Aviation Company in the World
Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation is a leading aerospace manufacturer founded in 1923 by the Russian born engineer and aeronautical genius Igor Sikorsky. During more than 85 years this company has built aircraft and helicopters for the military and civilian market, perhaps making it the oldest aviation company in existence. First named Sikorsky Aero Engineering Corporation it was originally based at Utgoff Farm in Hempstead, Long Island, New York. In its first year of operations, the Sikorsky S-29A airplane became their first aircraft design built in the United States. During the mid-1920´s and most part of the 1930´s they built multi-engine amphibian airplanes and long range commercial aircraft. At the end of the decade, Igor Sikorsky resumed his helicopter work that was halted in 1910 when he decided to focus on fixed-wing aircraft. http://www.sikorsky.com/vgn-ext-templating-SIK/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=208ae39d40a78110VgnVCM1000001382000aRCRD
In 1939, Sikorsky built the VS-300, the world’s first practical helicopter. During the next 70 years Sikorsky dedicated all efforts to develop and build the best helicopters in the world, from the S-51 which was its first helicopter on active duty in Korea to the UH-60 Black Hawk which played a big roll during Desert Storm, in Kuwait in 1991. An estimated 2 million lives have been saved by its helicopters since Sikorsky performed the world´s first helicopter rescue in the year 1944. http://www.sikorsky.com/vgn-ext-templating-SIK/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=208ae39d40a78110VgnVCM1000001382000aRCRD
