Overview
Sign language is communicating with your hands through grammatically correct handshapes. As such, it is a recognized language, not merely gesturing. Sign language is used all over the world, because many spoken languages have a sign language based on them. While sign language is used mostly by deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, it can be used by many more. Babies can learn to communicate early through Baby Sign and hearing people can even use sign language to "speak" quietly!
In the United States, there are primarily three recognized sign languages. These are: American Sign Language (which is the most used), Signed Exact English (which is often taught in deaf schools) and Pidgin Signed English, a kind of mash-up of the two.
