Five-time Academy Award Best Director-nominee Sidney Lumet has been a prominent American filmmaker since the 1950s. He has directing credit on over fifty films.
In the 1970s, Lumet directed both Dog Day Afternoon and Network. Both films were critically praised and noted for their wry sense of humor, while dealing with issues such as suicide, violence and homosexuality.
12 Angry Men
Lumet's feature film debut, 12 Angry Men won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and earned him his first Best Director nomination. The film began Lumet's often-used theme of claustrophobic spaces to create tension and suspense. The film is ranked as #12 on the IMDb Top 250 and has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also earned Henry Fonda a BAFTA award for "Best Foreign Actor."
