The Siberian husky is one of three Artic breeds of dogs recognized by the American Kennel Club. They are medium-sized, with a dense coat and originated in eastern Siberia. Initially used exclusively for sled-pulling, modern day huskies are shown and used as family pets. The breed is naturally intelligent, alert and eager to please.
History
The Siberian Husky was originally imported to Nome, Alaska in Autumn of 1908 by William Goosak. Though he endured ridicule for his dogs, Goosak entered a team of Siberian Huskies into the 1909 All Alaska Sweepstakes. The team surprised everyone by placing third in the race.
Three teams of Siberian Huskies were entered into the race the following year and placed first, second, and fourth respectively. Siberian Husky teams won the final three Sweepstakes races in 1915, 1916, and 1917 just before World War I put an end to the great race series.
In 1925, a diphtheria epidemic spread across Nome. Siberian Huskies were used to relay life-saving medicine back into the city.
In 1927, Leonhard Seppala entered a team of Siberian Huskies into a race at Poland Spring, Maine, where the smallish dogs again surprised the crowd by winning the race. The team continued racing until 1932.
The American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed in 1930, though the original breed Standard has since been revised five times. A Siberian Husky first won Best In Show in 1955.
Siberian Huskies continue their function as racing dogs even today, though many are simply family companions. http://www.shca.org/shcahp2d.htm
