  • A shower curtain is a waterproof cloth or vinyl sheet that hangs along the outer edge of a bathtub or shower to prevent water from leaking on the bathroom floor and to provide some privacy while showering or bathing. Shower curtains are often treated to prevent the growth of mildew.

  • Cleaning

    The shower curtain is a moist surface and a favorite location for mold and mildew to grow. Clean it every two weeks by putting it in the washing machine with several towels and a cup of bleach. For fabric shower curtains use a cup of baking soda. Read the manufacturers cleaning directions before doing this to ensure that the shower curtain does not get damaged. Do not use a hot water wash cycle on a plastic shower curtain or put it in the dryer as it may melt. Instead hang the shower curtain back up on the rod and let it drip dry.

    Soaking a shower curtain in a salt or vinegar solution can help to prevent mildew. Switching to body wash rather than bar soap can cut down on soap scum.
