    Donovan was drafted by the San Jose Sharks during the second round of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft and made his NHL debut in the 1994-1995 season, during which he played 14 games. The next year he played a full season with the Sharks to earn 21 points in 74 games.

    Midway through the 1997-1998 season, Donovan was traded to the Colorado Avalanche. The next decade would find Donovan playing with the Avalanche, the Atlanta Thrashers, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Calgary Flames and the Boston Bruins before joining the Ottawa Senators for the 2007-2008 season.

    Donovan's best season to date was the 2004-2005 season with the Calgary Flames. Donovan played in every game as the Flames made it to the final round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Donovan earned 42 points in the regular season and another ten in the post-season to more than double his point count from any previous year.
