  • NHL Career

    Bates was drafted 103rd overall in the 1993 NHL draft by the Boston Bruins. He did not join the NHL right away, but attended and played for Boston University for four years, including winning the NCAA Championship in 1995. Bates made his NHL debut with the Bruins in 1997 and split his first two seasons between the Bruins and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Providence Bruins. On July 8, 2001, Bates signed as a free agent with the New York Islanders. Bates was limited to just two games during the 2007-08 season after undergoing hip surgery and treatment for a sports hernia.
