• Shaving cream is applied to the skin prior to using a razor to remove hair. Shaving cream is also sold in a gel form. It is used to prevent razor burn and irritated skin. Shaving creams may also soften the hair, allowing for a closer shave. Some people prefer not to use a shaving cream and use regular soap, facial soap or water alone. Many men use aftershave after the use of shaving cream to assist with the healing of skin.
