Eight-year-old Shasta Groene of Idaho was kidnapped and sexually abused along with her nine-year-old brother Dylan Groene in mid-2005. Joseph Duncan abducted the children after killing their mother, her fiancee and their 13-year-old brother at their home in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Joseph Duncan Sentencing
In December 2006, Joseph Duncan pleaded guilty to multiple counts of murder and kidnapping connection with the Groene case. Duncan was given the death penalty in August 2008 for the murder of Dylan Groene, and federal prosecutors were said to be seeking consecutive life sentences related to Shasta Groene's kidnapping.
