On April 24, 2009, a lawsuit against stone by lawyer William Jacobson was made public for the first time. Jacobson's suit, which he filed in November 2008, alleged that Stone owed him over $107,000 in legal fees. The suit was settled for an undisclosed sum. Stone made her acting debut in the film Stardust Memories. She moved on to bigger roles in the films Irreconcilable Differences, Action Jackson, King Solomon's Mines and Above the Law. Stone is most noted for her role as Catherine Tramell in the thriller film Basic Instinct. In 1995, she won a Golden Globe Award for her role in the film Casino.China Controversy
Stone sparked controversy after she stated in an interview at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008 that the May 12th earthquake in China may have been a result of "bad karma" due to Beijing's rule in Tibet. Following her remark, Christian Dior reportedly dropped Stone from its Chinese ads, her films were boycotted by one of China's biggest cinema chains and the Shanghai International Film Festival excluded her from their 2008 events.
